Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique, or Bowtech, is a unique, non-invasive physical therapy that promotes deep relaxation and self healing. It is safe to use on anyone, in all ages and stages of life, from newborns to the elderly. Bowen therapy stimulates a state of deep relaxation and is thought to act upon the Autonomic Nervous System to allow the body to rebalance and heal itself. It is a truly holistic therapy that addresses the body as a whole and acts not only at the level of structural and functional systems but also at the level of the individual's overall well-being, encompassing body, mind and spirit.

Bowen Technique on the Face

The Bowen therapy was developed over 40 years ago by the late Tom Bowen of Australia. His extraordinary successes in treating thousands of patients were documented by a government inquiry into alternative health practices in Australia in 1975. Tom Bowen took on only six students over the years. Two of them, Oswald and Elaine Rentsch, studied and recorded his technique and by agreement did not start to teach it until after his death in 1982. Since then they have been responsible for introducing the Bowen Technique to over 30 countries. Practitioners around the world have embraced Bowtech for its remarkable effectiveness, its gentle application and the diversity of problems it addresses.

The basic Bowen technique consists of a series of subtle, rolling moves over specific points on the body. The skin slack is gently tractioned over a muscle, tendon or nerve sheath in the opposite direction of the intended move. A gentle challenge is applied and then the skin is moved back across the structure to the limit of the available skin slack.

During a Bowen treatment session, the therapist applies the moves in a series of precise patterns, leaving the room for two to five minutes between each pattern in the series. This gives time for the body to assimilate the work and allows for a maximum response and relaxation. Treatments usually last for 45 minutes to one hour and are scheduled at 5 to 7 day intervals. Many conditions are effectively changed in 3 to 5 sessions. If there is no response by this point it is probably not the appropriate therapy at this time.

Many people choose to have ongoing monthly or quarterly maintenance treatments once their initial complaint has been addressed. Some chronic conditions in particular may require ongoing maintenance sessions. Bowtech allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention. It can be used to enhance the effects of other modalities, particularly homeopathy. However, its effectiveness appears to be reduced by modalities affecting energy flow and deep tissue, such as chiropractic, massage or acupuncture. It is recommended that no other therapies be performed for 4 days before or 5 days after a Bowen treatment.

Conditions Treated by the Bowen Technique

Bowen Technique on the Back

The Bowen Technique achieves profound relief from a wide spectrum of conditions. It reduces physical, emotional and mental stresses, improves joint mobility, lymphatic and venous circulation, supports toxin elimination, and promotes a state of ease and well-being. Bowen practitioners have been increasingly expanding the range of conditions that the technique has been found to effectively treat. At this point we can list the following conditions as those that show substantial improvement under the influence of the Bowen Technique:
