Stay hydrated during hot weather!
Stay hydrated during hot weather!

Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are more common in the hot humid days of August, especially for diabetics, menopausal women the elderly or just about anyone with a less efficient metabolism. As electricity costs rise, keeping the air conditioning on day or night is just not an option for some, so here are some ways to keep cool naturally.

Ways to Beat the Heat Naturally

Stay out of the sun at hotter times of the day, which is usually between 11 am and 3 pm

  1. Always freeze a bottle of water and take it with you everywhere that you go on a hot day.
  2. Keep ice packs in the freezer, and if you get too hot, apply it to the back of your neck or wrists to help you cool down.
  3. Stay away from consuming spicy, salty foods and instead eat bitter, astringent foods such as cucumbers, radishes and watercress.
  4. Wear a brisk essential oil such as spearmint or peppermint, which are bracing scents that can help cool you down.
  5. If you feel a little too hot after gardening or a hike, you can always replenish your electrolytes by drinking a purified water mixed with a bit of lemon juice, a dash of salt, and if you like, a dash of honey.
  6. Head for the nearest swimming pool or beach. Cooling down in a natural body of water is one of the best remedies for feeling too hot.
  7. Move slowly to help your body adjust to the rising temperatures, as it is overexertion that can escalate your temperature to feverish levels.
  8. Drinking infused water can help you rehydrate. Add cucumbers, lemons, limes, watermelon, berries and herbs such as mint, basil or thyme to your water, to encourage you to drink more when it is hot out.
  9. During the day, keep your home dark. Close the blinds or drapes to keep things cool.
  10. Use your oven as little as possible as cooking food can increase the temperature in the room. If you do have an exhaust fan above your stove elements, keeping them on as you cook can help keep the air cooler.
  11. Put your sheets in the freezer before putting them on your bed
  12. Sleep in cotton pyjamas instead, or preferably sleep naked.
  13. Make sure your home has many houseplants, as they are the best natural coolers. Plants around windows and door can help cool and moisturize air wafting through building portals.
