Cystitis can cause pain in the uretha and bladder.
Cystitis can cause pain in the uretha and bladder.

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder that can be the result of irritation, infection or bruising. In over half of cases, cystitis is caused by e-coli bacteria getting caught in the urethra and then clinging to the walls of the bladder. The result is usually an infection that makes you feel that you always have the urge to urinate when you don’t. Once you do urinate, it stings or burns and if the infection has set into the bladder, then there will be blood in the urine. This type is called bacterial cystitis.

However, there is a more frustrating type of cystitis to deal with, called non-bacterial cystitis, which can be caused by environmental factors. In this case, fragrance, soap, detergents and swimming pool chlorine can irritate the delicate tissue of the urethra. Riding a bicycle, motorcycle, or even an exercise bike also causes non-bacterial cystitis.

Here are some other things that you can do to help heal both acute and chronic cases of either bacterial or non-bacterial cystitis.

  1. Drink a lot of water. Go for more than the usual eight glasses a day. If your cystitis is caused by an infection, then this will help rinse the bacteria or yeast out of your system. Make sure that you are also drinking water from a pure source. Distilled water is best because it is free of contaminants and can help rinse your entire system
  1. Drink barley water. Barley water is an alkaline substance that also acts as anti-inflammatory agent for the urinary system. Barley is also soporific in nature, which means that it makes tissues bit slippery and helps ease the pain of having to eliminate the painful crystals that are often part of having cystitis. Boil one cup of barley in 3 cups of water. Strain the mixture and drink the resulting liquid throughout the day.
  1. Drink unsweetened cranberry juice. Cranberry juice helps overcome cystitis because they are high in proanthocyanidins, which prevent the e-coli bacteria from attaching to the mucus lining of your uretha and bladder. This matters because bacteria can’t multiply if they can’t attach to the mucus lining. Cranberry juice works best if taken as a preventative measure, if you know you are already prone to them because you have a smaller urethra or if you are in the earlier stages of infection.
  2. .Eat sliced or chopped raw garlic. Raw garlic has a substance called allicin, which is a natural antibiotic helps fight infections. If you cook the garlic or try to eat it whole (not advisable anyway), the allicin is not available to your body. To help tolerate the taste add chopped raw garlic to salads, dips, guacamole, bruschetta and coleslaw. Don’t take the garlic as a supplement. Eat as much garlic as you can tolerate a day to help combat the infection.
  1. Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C a day in the form of calcium acerbate, which is less acidic than the typical ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is a potent anti-inflammatory and bacteria fighter than can help both fight and heal the infections associate with cystitis. It can also help deal with the light bruising that is sometimes associated with sexual intercourse or riding a bike and that can cause cystitis symptoms
