Nutritional support of the thyroid is more important than ever, especially in this era of rising cases of insulin resistance, diabetes and other disorders directly related to the thyroid such as hypothyroidism (causing weight gain) and hyperthyroidism (causing weight loss). The butterfly-shaped thyroid is one of the master glands in the body and can be found nestled just below the throat and cradled just above the collarbone. Foods That Support Healthy Thyroid Function

Avocados.  Avocados are rich in monosaturated fats that help stimulate the metabolic rate of the body as well as antioxidants that fight cancer-causing free radicals.  Eating avocados also help neutralize fatty cholesterol deposits and remove toxic substances from the organs, to help relieve stress on the thyroid.

Brussels Sprouts. Brussels sprouts are a rich source of protein, iron, and calcium, assisting the thyroid with the production of thyroxin. The calcium in broccoli helps to strengthen the body’s immune system and intensify metabolic activity.

Blueberries. Blueberries assist with hypothyroidism (weight gain caused by a sluggish thyroid) because they are very rich in flavonols, polyphenols and antioxidants that help improve metabolism and immunity, thus allowing this crucial gland to better do its job of regulating inflammation and blood sugar in the body.

Broccoli. Broccoli is rich in several nutrients that support, including fiber, a broad spectrum of vitamins as well as the minerals calcium and magnesium, which are useful for treating thyroid issues.

Goji Berries. Also known as the Lyceum berry or wolfberry, Goji berries are mostly available in the dried form here in Canada. These fruits that resemble large golden raisins are one of the best foods for thyroid support, helping to improve the secretion of thyroxin and speed up a slow thyroid.

Peas.  Peas are a natural source of organic zinc, a mineral that is crucial for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland.  A deficiency in zinc is linked to a sluggish thyroid and the secretion of less thyroxin.

Tomatoes. Tomato is rich in the mineral selenium that is crucial for the thyroid to operate properly proper functioning of the thyroid. The selenium works to detoxify, in order to protect thyroid glands during stress. The compounds of selenium are also responsible for the synthesis of the T4 into T3 while assisting in maintaining iodine levels in the body. Selenium balances the metabolic activity of the thyroid, and also throughout the organs and tissues of the body.
