Avoid buying precut fruit.

If you care about your health and the environment, then make it your personal policy to avoid buying precut produce. Precut fruit comes with all kinds of potential threats to your health such as food-borne illnesses and the plastic containers it is sold in often ends up in landfills or the ocean.  Precut fruit is also often deteriorated due to light and temperature exposure, offering less nutrition and therefore having you consume what can be called a sub-optimal diet.

Avoid Foodborne Illness by Avoiding Pre-Cut Fruit

Precut food is notorious for harboring salmonella. The symptoms of consuming a contaminated product include nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever, and bloody diarrhea. The worst culprit for this is pre-cut melons, which are a natural growth media for bacteria.  Melons are also grown on the ground and often not washed before the fruit is cut. This allows bacteria from the skin of the fruit to easily contaminate the flesh of the fruit.  Melons are so susceptible to salmonella poisoning that even when you are preparing the whole fruit at home it is recommended that you scrub the skin of the fruit very robustly with a brush.

Precut Fruit Is Less Nutritious

Precut fruit is not fresh produce. Once the fruit is cut, it begins to oxidize leading to rapid deterioration and loss of nutrients. Cut fruit is not naturally preserved in any way. The whole fruit is still alive after being harvested and it respires and rots slowly. Once the fruit is cut this process is expedited and a loss of vitamins is the result. This same process also causes the fruit to have less juice and less flavor.

Precut Fruit May Contain Additives

One of the main problems with marketing precut fruit is that it turns brown quickly. To avoid these companies use a product called Natureseal, which is actually calcium absorbate. Calcium absorbate is generally considered to be a safe additive, but the fact that it works so well in helping the fruit preserve its color, it also helps conceal the fact of how old the fruit might be in the container.  Those watermelon chunks in the plastic cup that look like they were cut just yesterday, might actually be a week old and devoid of any nutrition at all.

Yet another common additive to precut produce is chlorine. For instance, those baby carrots you buy are often subjected to a chlorine rinse, and chlorine is a cancer-causing agent.

Save Money By Buying Organic Whole Produce

There is also a high price of buying pre-cut produce. Precut produce costs anywhere from two to ten times more than just buying the whole fruit or vegetable.  For instance, an investigation that Vice did in found that people could save $100 a month on their grocery bill if they bought whole rather than chopped vegetables.  The worst was chopped onions, which sold whole for 49 cents a pound at Walmart and $4.99 a pound when sold in a container.

It is important to remember that living a healthy and active lifestyle is all about making the right choices at any given moment and that includes not buying pre-cut fruit when you can buy a whole, organic fruit that is much better for you instead and prepare it in a sanitary manner for your own consumption at home.
