The idea that spending time in a dry hot sauna is excellent for yout health not just a Northern European conceit. An intriguing brand new health study from Norway, published May 2018, definitively concludes that Sauna bathing reduces the risk of stroke in Finnish men and women  The study followed the habits of over 1,628 adult men and women between the ages of 53-74 years and found that the group that took saunas 4 to 7 times a week were 62% less likely to have either a ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, then those who had a sauna just once a week. Those who relaxed in the sauna 2-3 times a week also benefited with only 12% of that group suffering from an incident.

Saunas Also Reduce Your Risk of Dementia

Yet another study out of Finland – Sauna bathing is inversely associated with dementia and Alzheimers and Middle-Aged Finnish Men found that men who took a sauna four to seven times a week displayed a 66 percent less chance of developing dementia. The study concluded that the more saunas that males, from 42-62 years old took, the more they benefited from the lowered risk.

Yet another 2012 study  shows that taking a sauna can also help the body sweat out such toxins dermally. The eliminated toxic metals included Cadmium, arsenic, lead, and mercury, which are all poisons associated with the development of Alzheimer’s.

The Health Benefits of Taking A Sauna

The news that saunas are good for you is not lost on the residents of Finland who have been taking them for centuries. The health regimen is so popular that there is approximately one sauna available for every five citizens in Finland.

Aside from the direct benefits for the heart and it’s vessels, helping to reduce inflammation and effortlessly self-chelate, sitting in a sauna once a day can also help to:

  • Battle insomnia
  • Increase the flexibility of blood vessels
  • Help to lower cholesterol
  • Mediate inflammation all over the body
  • Help to regulate body temperature
  • Relieve muscle and joint pain
  • Calm the nervous symptoms such as panic and anxiety
  • Help the body fight against the free radicals that cause infections
  • Help with depression and anxiety

In order to optimize the health benefits of taking a sauna, you should configure your sauna to mimic the dry air of a typical contemporary Finnish sauna, with the air set to be very high and the temperature set between 80 C and 100 C at the level of the sauna bather’s face.
