Obesity leads to cognitive problems.
Obesity leads to cognitive problems.

People who become obese often find themselves suffering from “foggy brain”, confusion or becoming forgetful, with the symptoms becoming more severe with each pound gained.  That is because obesity is associated with inflammation, including inflammation of the brain, which in turn may increase your risk of dementia. Furthermore, the insulin resistance that is associated with weight can lead to both cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Obesity also short-circuits the messages that your brain gets from hormones, leading you to believe that you are hungrier than you are, so obese individuals tend to be locked inside of a vicious circle, where they eat more, suffer more cognitive impairment and then repeat the cycle until they are obese and suffering from some very real organic brain damage.

Obesity Might Shrink Your Brain

Research published in Radiology recently found that people with a higher total fat percentage might have lower volumes of gray matter in their brain. Gray matter constitutes the outer layer of the brain, which governs language, memory, planning, judgment and problem-solving.

Yet another study done in the United Kingdome in 2010, found that individuals who had a paunch (an excess of abdominal fat) also experienced the kind of diminished brain volume that leads to cognitive issues and brain fog.  Those who were obese did not exercise and smoked were found the most diminished brain capacity of all.

Obesity Increases Dementia and Insulin-Resistant Brain Fog

Obesity is a notorious cause of inflammation and known for increasing the risk of dementia and, according to the Radiology study, if you are overweight when you are younger, you are also more likely to suffer from greater atrophy than is expected for your age. Furthermore, another study in the Annals of Neurology found that an excess of body fat, particularly visceral fat, secretes hormones that can cause inflammation and contribute to lower gray matter in the brain.

The Framingham Heart Study also stated that obesity was one of the biomarkers for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  Both diabetes and high fasting glucose levels are associated with a lower total brain volume, with fogginess and confusion being symptoms.

Over-Eaters Make Poor Food Choices

Another study in Trends in Cognitive Sciences Review surmised that obese people make poor food choices, thanks to the fact that they have experienced shrinkage in the pre-frontal cortex of the brain.  This is the part of the brain that helps you determine what you want to eat, but because your innate sense of dietary regulation is damaged, you tend to choose foods that perpetuate, rather the prevent, the diminishment of the brain’s gray matter.

There are several ways you can avoid obesity and boost your brain, with the number one priority is getting on a program to lose weight. Getting more sleep, eliminating sugar from the diet, exercising and eliminating stress from can also assist you with eliminating weight gain and the cognitive and memory impairment it comes with.
