18-111-LLSC_1310x769_WebcastPageBannerShort term memory problems, poor concentration, and mild confusion are the symptoms of a condition known as “brain fog.” Everybody experiences this condition that seems to affect individuals as they age. The lack of mental clarity and inability to focus can result in the forgetting of deadlines, misplacing your car keys and exasperation when it comes to remembering words

What Causes Brain Fog?

Brain fog can be caused by several things, including a variety of conditions such as Diabetes Type 2, vascular dementia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Several medications can cause brain fog including anti-depressants, antihistamines, and opioids. Exposure to technology over a prolonged period coupled with TMI (Too Much Information) can also interfere with our ability to feel “clear.” Here are some tips for learning how to manage these factors so that you can feel clearer headed.

  • Take a break from technology – The more cell phone, computer, and television technology you are exposed to, the more you will suffer from cognitive overload. Of course, this can feel like it might be next to impossible, especially if your job entails working on a computer all day. One tip is to refine your focus by turning off all alerts on your computer and focusing on only one task.
  • Take care of your gut flora – The health of your gut flora influences how information is transmitted from thought to thought in your brain. This is because the gut produces 90 percent of the body’s serotonin and bacteria. Consuming prebiotics and probiotics can help reduce stress and anxiety and boot activity in areas of the brain associated with emotions, learning, and memory.
  • Spend some time in nature – A walk to the local park might do it but if you want to restore your brain then get out of the urban centers where chronic exposure to air pollutants can affect the brain. The worst culprit is high C02 levels, so getting out of town and connecting to an environment where there is a leafy canopy is one of the best ways to reset and recharge your brain.
  • Get enough light — We need to receive at least 30 minutes of bright light through the “windows of our eyes” for at least 30 minutes every day, as this helps stimulate the pineal gland (the master gland) and get all systems of the body working at once. The ideal time of day to do this is first thing in the morning, to help boost your mood, productivity, and motivation.
  • Improve your chi with acupuncture – Eastern medicine tells us that when our natural energy channels are blocked problems like fatigue, stress and anxiety are the results. When certain points on the body are stimulated, emotional blockages and toxins can be released resulting in increased mental clarity, vitality and serenity.
