The classic grapefruit diet works by restricting calories.
The classic grapefruit diet works by restricting calories.

Some things never get old, and this is definitely true of the traditional Grapefruit Diet, which as been the classic calorie restriction for ladies trying to lose a fast 10 pounds in three days and even more weight if you stay on it for ten days. It is also sometimes called The Navy Diet or Army Diet, as it was also used as regimen to treat obesity in American soldiers. Its like the little Black Dress of the fast weight loss world, but be forewarned, like all crash diets, it can be hard to keep the pounds off for long if you don’t stick to a healthy lifestyle.

You might be asking yourself, “Does the Grapefruit Diet work?” The answer is yes. This diet has been around for a century because when you stop eating carbs and eat below 1000 calories a day, you are simply bound to lose the weight. The diet also works, at least temporarily, because it is technically a low-calorie, low-carb regimen. Also, the simplicity of the Grapefruit diet makes it a classic. It suits many people because it does not require making a smoothed, buying exotic supplements or searching for expensive super foods.

Is the Grapefruit Diet Healthy?

The unhealthiest thing about the diet, is that it is, in essence, a crash diet, and I would not advise anyone to stay on it more than ten day and the original diet calls for eating hot dogs on Day 2, which shouldn’t be your first choice of entrée. However, grapefruit in itself is very nutritious and causes weight loss because it is a low glycemic fruit with no fats or starches that is also very high in the mineral chromium.

Chromium is a mineral that is on the first line of defense when it comes to fighting the accumulation of internal fat and balancing blood sugar. Additionally. grapefruits are high in linoleic acids that help your metabolism convert fats into energy. The large amounts of soluble fiber, in the form of pectin or grapefruit, also prevent glycemic situations help you feel full and clear your intestines and arteries of fat.

Grapefruit is also very high in vitamins and antioxidants that help reduce the type of inflammation that leads to weight gain. These citrus nutrient bombs contain high amounts Vitamin C, which ensures the healthy function of all systems, Vitamin A, which supports liver and kidney and a variety of minerals that support the proper functioning of your pancreas and thyroid. The high potassium levels in grapefruit also work quickly as a diuretic to help reduce belly bloat and levels of sodium in your body.

The Basic Grapefruit Diet

Day 1

Breakfast

Have one cup of black tea or coffee with stevia as sweetener I desire, ½ of a grapefruit and one slice of toast with peanut butter.

Lunch

Consume ½ cup of tuna (packed in water), 1 slice of dry toast and black coffee or tea with stevia, if desired.

Dinner

Consume 3 ounces of broiled or baked lean meat with the fat trimmed, 1-cup of steamed green beans, 1 cup of steamed carrots, 1 apple and 1 cup of sugar-free vanilla ice cream. Salt, pepper and lemon juice are allowed as seasonings.

Day 2

Breakfast

Consume 1 boiled or poached egg, 1 slice of dry toast, 1 small banana and 1 cup of black coffee or tea.

Lunch

Consume 1 cup of cottage cheese and six crackers or four pieces of Melba toast.

Dinner

The traditional diet calls for 2 boiled hot dogs. 1 cup of steamed broccoli, ½ cup o steamed carrots, one small banana and ½ cup of sugar-free vanilla ice cream. You can substitute a cup of steamed cabbage or the broccoli. For those of you have been “off” eating hot dogs for a couple o, I suggest eating four ounces of bake lean protein in the form of turkey, chicken or beef.

 Day 3

Breakast

#Consume one apple, 1 ounce of cheddar cheese, five saltine crackers and black tea and coffee. You can have three Melba toasts instead of the saltine crackers if you like.

Lunch

#One cup of tuna (packed in water), 1 cup of steamed carrots, 1 cup of steamed cauliflower, 1 cup of melon chunks and ½ cup of sugar-free ice cream

Dinner

#You can have 6 ounces of any meat and any steamed vegetables except for corn or beans. Good choices are baked or broiled steak chicken or fish.

Of course, before embarking on this or any other diet you should check with your naturopath, dietician or doctor to make sure that this is an appropriate weight loss regiment for you. Note too, that consuming grapefruit does interfere with some drugs, including those used or high blood pressure and to lower cholesterol.
