Harvest sunflower seeds for Omega 6 Oils.

Eating organically and locally is important and quite easy i you happen to live on a farm or have the ability to visit one of the many farmer’s markets that are popping up daily in every single urban center, including Toronto. It is quite easy to get Vitamins A, B, C and E from vegetables that you grow in your garden, but not as easy when it comes to other nutrients such Omega Six. Omega Six oils are essential to heath and help stimulate skin and hair growth, regulate the metabolism, maintian bone health and reulate the reproductive system. This is also the fatty acid that is recognized as being the heart-healthy oil.

How to Up Your Take Of Omega Six Fatty Acids

If you want to grow your own omega six oils in your garden then there are a few plants that you can try cultivating and these include linseeds, rapeseed, soybeans and wheat. The problem is that to get the omega six benefits from these plants you would also need some way of pressing the oil from your harvest. This is not feasible for most people so your option is sto buy organic linseed oil, flaxseed oil, canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil and wheat oil from your local health store.

You are a little luckier if you have a nut tree growing in your back yard as all nuts contain some omega six oils and you can get the benefits simply by shelling the nut and eating them. One of the richest sources of omega 6 oils are walnuts. Walnuts contain 28 grams of omega six oils per 100 grams. Unfortunately, in Ontario there are not many nut farming communities, but if you take a trip down south every winter, then be sure to consume as many nuts as you can from the local markets and trees.

The next richest source of omega 6 oil from a nut tree are Brazil nuts, which contain 23 grams of omega six oils per 100 grams. Most other nuts contain below 10 grams of omega six oils per 100 grams. Cashews, almonds and hazelnuts also contain much more minute amounts of this important essential fatty acid.

Sunflower Seeds and Pumpkin Seeds Provide Omega Six Oils

Perhaps the simplest source of omega 6 oils to grow in Ontario are sunflowers. Sunflower seeds have 30 grams of heart healthy omega 6 oils per 100 gram serving. Yet another great source is pumpkin seeds that have 20 grams of omega six oils per 100 grams.

At Halloween don’t throw away the insides of that pumpkin. Sprinkle soy sauce or salt and butter on the raw pumpkin seeds you have scooped out of the pumpkin shell and toast in the oven at a low temperature for half an hour to forty minutes.

Aside from containing both omegas 6 and omega 3 fats that help maintain a healthy heart, pumpkin and sunflower seeds also contain healing zinc, calming magnesium and blood enriching iron. They are also rich in minerals due to their high polyunsaturated fat content.

Eating your pumpkin seeds is not only the healthy and ecologically thing to do but eating pumpkin seeds is said to bring good luck. Likewise eating sunflower seeds brings luck, fertility and increases the likelihood of a wish coming true.
