Too much sodium in your diet increases your blood pressure and overworks the kidneys.  Remember to read food labels as ideally, you should not be consuming more than 5 grams of sodium a day.

Resisting The Urge to Go

One way to harm your kidneys is to hold urine in, instead of going to the bathroom the minute that nature calls. Retaining your urine can cause all kinds of issues including kidney failure, incontinence, and kidney stones.  Always urinate when your body tells you too unless you are facing an extreme emergency.

Eating Too Much Animal Protein

A sure way to stress out your kidneys is to eat too much animal protein. The more animal protein that is in your diet, the more stress you are placing on your kidneys. In fact, if you know that you have kidney problems then it is probably best for you to avoid diets with a ketogenic carbohydrate-free component as that can push the organs to a crisis.

Drinking Alcohol and Taking Painkillers

Both alcohol and painkillers contain toxins that are difficult for the kidneys to process and taking both together, especially on a regular basis, can cause long-term damage to the kidneys as well as acute damage.  This includes both over-the-counter painkillers such as Advil and Motrin and also prescription ones such as Celebrex and Naproxen.
