Dust can make you fat.
Dust can make you fat.

If you are overweight and heading towards obesity, there might be more reasons then ever for you to keep your home spotless. Not only does getting up and cleaning around the house get you moving and expending calories, it also prevents you from being unnecessarily exposed to the environmental pollutants that are often found in dust.

House Dust Contains Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs for short) are exactly what they sound like. They are environmental pollutants that interfere with the body’s hormonal system that can have serious effects on the body’s neurological and reproductive systems and cause inflammation and impaired immunity. Furthermore, a study conducted last year by the American Chemical Society has found that even small amounts of house dust can encourage fat cells to accumulate more triglycerides.

Examples of the types of environmental pollutants that can be found in your house dust include bisphenol-A and phthalates (substances found in plastic to make them more flexible) and flame retardants.  A study has shown that this type of exposure can still cause obesity even though you were exposed to the hazards decades ago. Even tiny amounts of prenatal EDC exposure can cause obesity later in life. The fact is some EDCS have been shown directly to damage alpha and beta cells in the pancreas, liver cells and fat cells, causing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. This might also explain why 35% of the adult population in 2017 is not classified as obese.

Practical Tips For Keeping Your House Free of Dust

There are lots of things that you can do to keep your home free of that dust that is possibly laden with obesity causing EDCs.

  1. Invest in a good vacuum cleaner with a HEPA cleaning filter to help you remove dust every day from your home,
  2. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, mask, and gloves while you are cleaning to avoid inhaling or coming into contact with toxic particles.
  3. Avoid using chemical-laden liquid and aerosol cleaners and opt for natural formulations instead.
  4. Use a soft, damp cloth to dust shelves, counters and other surfaces.
  5. Work from the top of the room downwards, doing ceiling fan blades, high shelves and cupboards first,
  6. Remember to unplug electronic items and clean them with a damp cloth.
  7. Move appliances away from the wall to make sure you are properly cleaning beneath them.
  8. Suck up dust from behind vents with your vacuum cleaner.
  9. Make sure that when you are emptying vacuum cleaner bags that you are well protected from any dust flying out of the bag and back up into the air, however, the best vacuum cleaners nowadays tend to have disposable canisters rather than bags as dust receptacles.
  10. Arrange with a plumber or other home service expert to have your HVAC systems cleaned twice a year, including any water trays, pipes and air vents that might be part of the system.

Hopefully minimizing one’s exposure to the ECD’s in household dust will prevent obesity from escalating with individuals with endocrine-system related disorders such as insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.
