Is it realistic to think you can actually eat your way to feeling more blissful every day? The answer is yes. The middle of the winter is the time of year when most people find themselves suffering from a mild mood disorder. They feel a bit fatigued, down in the dumps and like they have no motivation. The solution to beating this mid-winter type of malaise is to make sure that you are eating healthy foods that help beat the blues.

Here is a list of foods that are good for your mood that I recommend that you eat every day to help keep you happy and healthy, not only in the winter, but during any time of the year. The best thing about them is that they are affordable and ordinary enough to be found in your supermarket. Try to stick to buying organic produce to up the nutrient content of what you consume.

Avocado

Eat an entire avocado every day, and you will experience a substantially improvement in your mood and all-over cognition. Avocados contain a very healthy form of monosaturated fat called oleic acid. Avocados also contain protein and a broad spectrum of vitamins including vitamins that help improve your mood such as B-9, B6, B5 and Vitamin E.

Dark Leafy Greens

There are few foods better at beating the blues than dark, leafy greens. This includes red leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, dandelion, watercress and Swiss Chard. Greens are a very rich source of magnesium, which alters your brain chemistry and helps you feel more relaxed. Magnesium also keeps your heart beating normally and your muscles physically relaxed. Lettuce also contains, vitamins A, C, E and K, minerals and phytochemicals that help fight inflammation in your brain and the rest of your body. Inflammation is linked not only to cancer and immune system problems, but also depression. Inflammation also causes depression because the chronic pain it causes, keeps you in a bad mood

Mushrooms

By now many of you have heard about the vagus nerve, the long stretch of synapses that links your mental function to your gut. When your gut is unhealthy, so is your brain. Mushrooms contain all sorts of phytochemicals and probiotics that help to promote healthy bacteria in your gut. This is crucial to your good mood because the nerve cells n our gut manufacture 80 percent to 90 percent of our body’s serotonin, a critical neurotransmitter that keeps us in an upbeat mood and thinking clearly. For best results, eat your mushrooms raw, in a salad, rather than fried, to help preserve their nutrition

Tomatoes

Tomatoes seem so commonplace, but when it comes to altering your brain chemistry for the better, they are a miracle food because they contain a great deal of alpha-lipoic acid and folic acid.   People who are depressed are often deficient in folic acid. Folic acid also prevents the your body from producing too much homcysteine, an inflammatory agent that prevents your brain from producing feel-good chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and norephinephrine.

Walnuts

Walnut meat resembles little brains, and ironically, they are also good for helping to balance out your brain chemistry. Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids that help support brain function. They are also a good source of Vitamin E, which is restorative to the human nervous system, and helps you eel less shaky.
