Can nuts help stop you from going nuts? The answer is maybe. All kinds of nuts, but in particular almonds, pecans and walnuts are considered to be good for your brain. This is because they contain high amounts of vitamin E as well as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which greatly assist with brain function. So if you are losing your memory, need to study up for a big test or are simply sick of forgetting the names of everyone you meet at a party, try eating more nuts.
Nuts Are Good for A Lot of Things
Nuts are not just good for the head. They are also good for the heart, the eyes, the gallbladder and the nerves. Eating them on a daily basis can also help reduce the risk of having a stroke and of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Studies have also proven that eating nuts prevent dementia, blindness due to age-related macular degeneration and the development of gallstones.
Many people are reluctant to supplement their diet with nuts as they fear it will make them fat. Although it is true that nuts do contain fat it is the good kind of fat that helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. Nuts have also been shown to reduce the number of lipids in the blood.
Nuts are good sources of fiber, vitamin E, folic acid, copper, magnesium and the amino acid arginine, for each of which there is evidence of a role in preventing heart disease. Almonds, pecans, and walnuts are also the best dietary source of manganese and contain plant sterols, the compounds now added to some margarine to reduce cholesterol absorption from food, and are a good source of boron?
So will eating nuts make you fat? One study called the Nurse’s Study, which was published in the British Medical Journal in 1998, found that eating nuts actually make you thinner. Nurses who were fed a daily diet of nuts over a period of six months apparently gained no weight at all.
It Is Easy to Add More Nuts to Your Diet
It is easy to add this nutritious food to your diet. Nuts are often being eaten in small quantities raw or as peanut butter. With a little imagination, nuts can easily add too many recipes including home-baked bread, cakes, soups, main dishes, sauces, stuffings, salads, and desserts. Nuts are also an essential ingredient in many gourmet dishes Waldorf salad, pesto and baklava. You can also use walnut or almond flour in place of other kinds of flour in your dishes.
Yet another good way to get a good dose of the beneficial omega acids and vitamins in nuts is to buy nut butters. You can buy walnut, pecan and almond butters in health food stores. You can spread these butters on bread, bake with them and even add them to your blender to up the brain power potential of a morning smoothie.
However, before you start buying those pecan pies, almond bars, and walnut tarts, keep in mind that one in one hundred and one in two hundred people may be allergic to one or more types of nuts. Both children and adults can be affected at any time so be aware that an allergic reaction can be a possibility for some individuals.
