Like other melons, cantaloupes tend to ripen in late summer and early fall. Cantaloupes are a variety of muskmelon and they are great to have for breakfast cut in half and filled with cottage cheese and berries or as a dessert filled with yogurt or ice cream.

Why eat cantaloupe every day? First of all, when it comes to nutrition cantaloupes are:

Cantaloupes are a healthy source of free radical fighting Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene with more than any other fruit including apricots, mangoes and peaches and the same amount as carrots

One cup of cantaloupe contains over 100 percent of the RDA for Vitamin C, which helps build collagen and cartilage as well as prevent asthma, cancer, and diabete

Cantaloupe is rich in vitamin B-9 and helps prevent cancer and aging

Cantaloupes are a good source of organic water, which assists with digestion, kidneys and maintaining a healthy blood pressure

Cantaloupe is a good source of fiber, preventing heart disease, weight gain, and constipation

Finally, cantaloupe makes a fantastic diet food because you can eat a whole cup of it and only end up eating 55 calories.

Ways to Fit More Cantaloupe in Your Die

Here are additional ways to include this super fruit in your diet so that you can lose weight by either consuming the watermelon as a meal, dessert or snack replacement or by using it as a substitute for food with higher fat or calorie content.

Enjoy a Strawberry, Cantaloupe Smoothie for breakfast at 178 calories. Blend one cup of cold coconut water or low-fat milk, one cup of ice, one cup of frozen strawberries, 2 cups of cantaloupe, two tablespoons of oatmeal and a tablespoon of raw organic honey. Blend all of the ingredients until smooth and serve. The oatmeal provides proteins and helps you feel full and the honey is a natural disinfectant that helps prevent cravings for sweets later on in the day. You can also use other berries in this smoothie if you like including frozen or fresh cranberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries.

Make a cantaloupe slushie by mixing a splash of coconut, dairy or nut milk to a blender full of ice and a cup of cantaloupe chunks. Whirl the mixture together until smooth and drink. You can also omit any type of milk and substitute coconut water, grapefruit, cranberry, lemon, lime, orange or strawberry juice.

Add fresh cantaloupe chunks to any salad and eat that as a meal. Cantaloupe can be added raw to any type of salad including fruit salads and ones with leafy greens.

Mix cantaloupe chunks and mint and blend with yogurt or cottage cheese for a healthy, high protein snack.

Make a low-calorie cantaloupe pudding. Blend one and one-half cups sliced cantaloupe with two tablespoons whole milk and 1 tablespoon of Truvia sweetener. Blend until thick and then chill in the refrigerator for two hours.

Make cantaloupe-coconut popsicles. Blend 3 cups cubed cantaloupe, ½ cup orange juice, one 14 ounce can of coconut milk, along with the juice and zest of one lime and two tablespoons agave syrup. Blend until smooth and then freeze in a popsicle mold that makes six to eight treats.

Dip cut cantaloupe chunks in melted chocolate with 70% cocoa content for a healthy treat that helps fight free-radical damage and cancer.

Try a classic Italian appetizer I Prosciutto and Melon, a type of Italian ham served with cantaloupe.

Tips for Eating Cantaloupe

  • When buying a cantaloupe, choose one that feels firm but also bit heavy, as that means it is ripe
  • Choose a cantaloupe that makes a deep sound, like a drum, when you tap the top of it
  • Do not choose cantaloupes that give away at the stem end when you press on it, as that means the cantaloupe is overripe
  • If you do not smell a strong cantaloupe aroma when you smell the stem side of the cantaloupe then it is likely not ripe
  • Cantaloupes are best stored in the crisper bin of your refrigerator
  • You must rinse a cantaloupe and wash it with a dry bristle brush before slicing it to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination
  • Cantaloupe must be eaten within two hours of cutting because after that you are at risk of salmonella or listeria poisoning
  • A light dash of salt helps to bring out the flavors of cantaloupe
