Put down that glass of red wine!
Put down that glass of red wine!

Not so long ago people were advised to drink a glass of red wine a day to help maintain their cardiovascular health but now a new study conducted at Washington University and published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and yet another published in Lancet shows that drinking one or two drinks a day can actually increase your chances of having an early death by about 20%. I know what you are thinking, “How can drinking a glass of wine a day suddenly be bad for me, when I have been told that it reduces heart disease?” Unfortunately, for some people, especially for those with a family history of cancer, it offers health setbacks rather than benefits

Drinking is Good for the Heart But It Also Causes Cancer

Unfortunately the new Washington University study, conducted by Sarah M. Hartz, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry found that even the lightest of daily drinkers of any kind of alcohol increases their mortality risk by 20%. This is because it also increases your risk of getting cancer by 20%.   This is sobering news for those who thought that a glass or two of red wine during dinner as actually good for your health.

The Lancet study , conducted by Robert Burton and Nick Sheren and published August 23, 2018, was a survey study of the impact of alcohol on rates of death, disability and ill health, that arrived at the conclusion that drinking any amount of alcohol is detrimental for your health. The study also concluded that “alcohol is a colossal global health issue and small reductions in health-related harms at low levels of alcohol intake are outweighed by the increased risk of other health-related harms, including cancer.” It also concluded that the harmful impact of alcohol extends beyond health into families, crime and disorder, and the workplace.

Should You Drink At All?

Evidence from both the Lancet and Washington University studies shows definitely that drinking any alcohol at all is bad for your health. However, Hartz suggested that the takeaway from the results of the study should be that those with a family history of heart disease could have a drink twice a month or so and those with a family history of cancer avoid it altogether. Also the older you are your risk of death from any cause increases, so if you are over the age of 25, it is probably a wise idea to quit drinking once and for all.
