Hello, Dr. Michael Rahman from the Pinewood Natural Healthcare Center here with an important health-related question that is on everyone’s mind this year.

Should I get the flu shot or not?

Washing your hands thoroughly several times a day may help prevent the spread of the flu.
Washing your hands thoroughly several times a day may help prevent the spread of the flu.

This is a question that so many of us ask ourselves every flu season. The information on the Internet can be so confusing because the news on the internet has changed from being authoritative to agenda-focused, meaning that you might be told what you want to hear to sell a product or a service or even so that you feel that you belong to part of a lifestyle or political movement. Unfortunately, it is not against the law to print misinformation on the internet and it becomes very much up to the individual whether or not to get one after talking to their naturopath or doctor.

On one hand you have the pro-vaxxers who have been getting the flu shot since childhood and who from personal experience can recommend as a way of warding of the flu. Some pro-vaxxers have never suffered any side-effects from getting the injection, which is commonly administered for free in the fall of each year. Even those who have had side-effects in the past continue to get the shot because having a mild bout of flu or minor side-effects far outweighs the grim suffering of contracting the flu for several days or even weeks.

On the other hand, you have the anti-vaxxers who maintain that getting the shot supports big pharm and corporate exploitation and that it causes autism and other ills. There have also been claims that the flu shot can reduce natural immunity and cause chronic health problems such as joint inflammation, muscle pain and earaches.

The decision of whether or not to get a flu shot is dependent on many different factors to do with your health. This includes your age, state of your general health including how old you are, whether or not you have a chronic disease, whether or not you are pregnant, whether or not you work with the public and whether or not you suffer from allergic reaction from eggs (as the injection solution may contain this.)

Getting this shot is a personal, individual decision that should be made with someone who has a pragmatic approach to healing and a full understanding of you as a person. As a naturopathic doctor I look at the entire picture of your general health before making that decision. I also firmly believe that in either case that you should use natural immune support therapy to counteract the flu itself as well as any side effects from the shot.

If I get the shot do I still need to boost my immunity?

Regardless of where you stand with regards to getting the flu shot it is important to understand that when flu season arrives that immune support is absolutely necessary whether you get the flu shot or not. At the Pinewood Natural Healthcare Centre we consider natural immunity boosting solutions as a supportive natural for those who get the flu shot and as a an absolutely necessary measure for those who do not get it at all.

To boost your immunity I or my colleagues may recommend:

Healthy living strategies such as quitting smoking

  • More exercise
  • Losing weight
  • Avoid stress
  • Getting your blood pressure and or blood sugar under control
  • Getting more sleep
  • Washing your hands more frequently
  • Cooking with natural immune fighting foods such as garlic, onion
  • Taking vitamin supplements in higher doses, especial A, C and D
  • Taking herbal supplements such as Echinacea, ginseng and probiotics
  • Homeopathic remedies
  • Acupuncture
  • Colonics
  • IV therapy
  • Dark field microscopy blood testing

What are the benefits of boosting my immunity?

The benefits of boosting your immune system naturally include not contracting the flu at all or contracting it for a shorter period of time. Your flu symptoms may also be less severe in nature.

The symptoms of the flu typically include

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

What happens if I don’t get a flu shoot or boost my immunity?

This is not so much a case of what is guaranteed to happen as what could happen as both natural immune boosting therapies and the flu shot are meant to be preventative therapies. If you are a really healthy individual with a strong immune system it is possible that you will not get the flu shot at all.

However, few people have antibodies to new strains of flus and the virus mutates every year. Complications include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration that requires a hospital infections and sinus infections. The flu can also worsen conditions such as heart failure, asthma or diabetes.

Flu season has started in Canada so it is time to take action now against this virus that mutates every year.
