Does caffeine actually cause weight gain? Anyone who has taken caffeine pills to lose a lot of weight in a short time might say yes, and very often the weight gain that follows adds a few pounds on top of what you were supposed to lose in the first place. However, caffeine can also be a great aid for people losing weight, providing it is not taken in excess.
Caffeine Is A Drug
Caffeine is made artificially so the FDA defines it as drug. It is also defined as a drug because it directly stimulates the human nervous system. Caffeine can also have all sorts of unpleasant side effects including nervousness, panic attacks, jitteriness, nausea, burning feeling in the esophagus, intestinal cramps, stomach cramps, thirst, headaches, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, increased heart rate and increased blood pressure.
Caffeine also has some other weird effects on the body. For instance if it is consumed within an hour after a meal it can cut the ability of your body to absorb iron by 40%. It only takes about 300 mg of caffeine to raise the heart rate and dangerously increase blood pressure. It may also cause spikes in insulin and blood sugar levels.
Consuming Caffeine Can Be Good and Bad
When it comes to dieting, caffeine can be good and bad. The key is moderation. Some studies have found that small amounts of caffeine may help prevent cancer because of the antioxidants it contains. On the other hand, large amounts can cause heart palpitations and other circulatory problems. When it comes to weight loss, it can be useful in helping you shed a few pounds of water weight to fit into a dress for a party. However, as all you are shedding is water and not pounds, you will regain all of the weight that you have lost.
One reason that it is good for weight loss is that caffeine seems to suppress the appetite for short periods of time. However on the other hand it also causes insomnia, which in turn causes weight gain. The fact that it is so stimulating is why many exercise experts recommend drinking a cup of it before you exercise. Recently too, a study has shown that drinking a cup of coffee after exercise has been shown to cut the duration of post work out joint and muscle aches and pains.
Caffeine and Empty Calories
Another dangerous element that is associated with caffeinated beverages is that they taste good yet contain empty calories (ones that don’t provide any nutrients.) If you fill up on these caffeinated colas and diet colas then you will not get the vitamins and minerals that you need. In fact it is thought that colas with caffeine in them might destroy certain building blocks for building healthy bones and teeth such as calcium and phosphorus.
Yet another risk to drinking a great deal of caffeine to boost weight loss or boost your metabolism is that you can develop a condition called caffeine sensitivity. Like an addict you may require higher and higher amounts of caffeine and sugar to feel well every day. The result of this type of addiction is sometimes a mental breakdown; obesity or insulin crashes that result in diabetes.
Will caffeine will help you with your weight loss efforts? There are some studies that seem to conclude that dieters who eat a low fat diet and exercise and that also drink a cup or two of coffee may find losing weight loss a little easier and as coffee is a diuretic, you might lose water and bloat. However. in general, there is no real proof that drinking caffeine causes a significant loss of body fat, especially if you drink it with cream and sugar!
