Are you in peri-menopause or menopause and finding that you are losing your hair?  This can be a very distressing time for some women who find it hard to deal with the hair thinning, widening part and bald patches that can occur as the result of hormonal changes, that are completely natural, but quite hard on the self-esteem.

Why Are You Losing Your Hair In Mid-Life?

Women lose their hair in mid-life when peri-menopause and menopause causes estrogen levels to lower. Estrogen mitigates the production another hormone called DHT (dihydortestosterone), which is a very active form of the male hormone testosterone. This causes hair follicles to start clogging, narrowing and eventually to stop producing hair at all. The entire hair loss process, due to the overproduction of DHT on the scalp, can take about 15 years. In a further ironic twist, the excess DHT that is produced by the body also causes women to grow hair on their face.

Thankfully there are some foods that you can eat every day to help your body naturally block the DHT production that is causing hair loss on your scalp and excess hair to grow on your face, arms and other places.

Consume  a generous helping of cooked Swiss Chard three times a week. This nourisihing green contains a steroid compound, found in no other food, that helps clear the scalp of accumulations of DHT and reduces hair shedding. When cooked, Swiss Chard also offers your body ample amounts of iron and lycopene, two nutrients that are essential for lush hair growth. Swiss Chard is also rich in zinc and magnesium, two minerals that not only redSwissChard1uce the stress and anxiety that is associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Add foods that supply ample amounts of the mineral zinc to your diet. Zinc helps blocked hair follicles produce less sebum and clears DHT from the scalp. The richest sources of zinc are found in shellfish, especially oysters, lobsters and crab. Vegetarian sources of inc include cooked white mushrooms, kale and oatmeal.

Eat a quarter of cup of pumpkin seeds every day. Pumpkin seeds contain a special steroid, contained in no other food, that prevents DHT from accumulating on the scalp. They are also an ample source of zinc and magnesium, which also help to keep the hair healthy and support brand new hair growth.

Consume foods that provide large amounts of the amino acid L-lysine. Nuts such as almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts, peanuts, pecans and walnuts are very rich in L-Lysine, as well as essential fatty acids that help nourish the hair. Other foods that are rich in this amino acid that presents hair loss are cooked asparagus, cooked tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, mangoes, carrots and sweet potatoes. These foods are also high in vitamin A and C, which also helps support the health of the scalp.

If your hair loss is severe, you may be able to reverse it and regrow hair through the use of hormone replacement therapy and natural medicines that support the thyroid. We can also administer iv therapy to address hair loss due to malnourishment.
