We have known for years that smoking cigarettes is bad for you, but are smoking e-cigarettes any better for your general health? This question is becoming more an more pertinent for those who are using vaping as a substitute for smoking. Being a holistic naturopathic doctor , I would not be for the inhaling of any unnecessary substances into your lungs, especially from unregulated industries such as the vaping. The main reason for this is that if you are getting nicotine from vaping you are likely getting inconsistent doses that can cause all kinds of physical symptoms including increased heart rate, symptoms of withdrawal, nausea, headaches and skin pallor.
What Are E-cigarettes?
E-cigarettes belong to a group of smoking devices called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). This refers to any device including an e-pen,e-pipe, e-hookah and e-cigar that contains nicotine or other substances.
E-cigarettes are usually battery-operated and use a heating element to heat e-liquid from a refillable cartridge that releases an aerosol full of chemicals. It is the liquid in the cartridges that can be problematic. To create the liquid nicotine is extracted from tobacco and mixed with propylene glycol, colorings and other chemicals.
Most naturopaths would not recommend putting glycerine, colorings and chemicals in the form of food in your body and it makes sense that you should also not inhale these elements into your lungs.
Currently there is no regulation of any of the 500 brands and 7,7000 flavors of 3-cigarrettes on the market so nobody knows what is realy in them. This means that each time that you vape you are taking an incredible risk with your health.
The Effects of E-cigarette Smoking on The Body
Here is what the latest studies have to say about the effects of e-cigarette smoking on the body.
According to research by Dicpinigaitis using e-cigarettes suppresses your ability to cough. This may sound like a good thing but actually coughing is the physical mechanism that cleanses toxins and debris out of your chest and throat.
Professor Daniel Sullivan from the University of Alabama School of Medicine found a correlations between the heat of the coil inside the vaping unit and the spontaneous creation of harmful chemicals in the inhalant. When you smoke an e-cigarette you risk getting cancer-causing chemicals like acrolein, actealdehyde and formaldehyde.
According to a study done by Temperance Rowell at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, different flavors of e-cigarrettes caused changes to calcium signaling, an indication of cancer, in the lungs. Among the worst flavors for your health were: banana pudding, hot cinnamon candies, banana pudding and menthol tobacco.
University of Toronto researcher Riyad al-Lehib found that smoking e-cigarettes does not help people quit smoking. Most people who start vaping revert to smoking real tobacco cigarrettes again within three months of vowing to wean themselves off cigarettes using a vaping technique.
According to a study done in 2009, the FDA found detectable levels of cancer causing chemicals, including anti-freeze in 18 various vaping cartridges. The same study found that the flavorings in e-cigarettes were laved as FEMA GRAS, which is a status that says flavorings are safe for food consumption. However these labels are false because this status only applies to food and not inhalants.
The American Lung Association says that the second hand vapor produced from e-cigarettes exposes people to benzene, formaldehyde and tobacco-specific notrosamines.
As a Toronto Naturopath I have seen hundreds of people quit using cigarettes by employing lifestyle changes, bio-feedback, hypnotisim and homeopathic remedies to help them handle the withdrawal.
