There are many reasons why people find it difficult to lose weight after age 50 and you can read all about that in a previous article that  I have written about why it is such a hard uphill battle for most. In a nutshell, older individuals experience a slowing down of their metabolism due to lower hormone production, insulin resistance and the consequences of living an unhealthy lifestyle for decades. However, there are some ways you can stave off and even reverse your tendency to gain weight by practicing the following.

#1 Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses o water a day. This helps your body flush out hormonally disruptive toxins that might be causing you to gain weight.

#2 Put yourself on a low-carb diet. Carbohydrates are transformed into sugar and make your pancreas work overtime, causing the metabolic disorders that lead to diabetes and obesity.  A good diet to try is the Paleo diet, which is mostly meat and low-carb vegetables.

#3 Eliminate sugar completely from your diet. Drink your tea and coffee black, stop drinking colas and drinks laden with sugar and read all labels the foods you buy to make sure you are not ingesting sugar.

#4 Put down the salt shaker.  Eating excess sodium, every day can cause cardiovascular problems and bloating that ages your kidneys prematurely and slows down your metabolism.

#5 Indulge in more aerobic exercise every day such as swimming, jogging or walking. This helps get your heart rate up and your blood oxygenated, which in turn, helps you have a more efficient metabolism.

#6 Start circuit training or lifting weights. It is imperative that people over 50 take measures to prevent muscle wasting. Lifting free weights, every day for ten or fifteen minutes can help stave off the natural loss of muscles that occurs after age 50. This is imperative because the less muscle you have, the less calories your body is able to burn.

#7 Do Yoga or Tai Chi at least once a week. This type of exercise helps to give your organs an inner massage. The graceful movements help to stimulate our circulatory, endocrine and digestive systems so they work more efficiently.

#8 Use a loofah or skin brush to stimulate your lymphatic and circulation. Brush your skin, starting at your extremities and keep brushing in short, brisk towards your heart to flush cellulite and fat out of your body.

#9 Avoid polluted areas and products that contain toxins, chemicals, and toxins. It is more important than ever to lead a life that is free of these agents because they are hormonal disruptors that can speed your demise. You should especially avoid recreational drugs and cigarette smoking.

#10 Deal with compulsive eating habits and addiction to food.  There are lots of reasons why people eat overeat and most of them are emotional. It is not unusual for anger and overconsumption of carbs and calories to go hand-in-hand with extreme weight gain.
