Biological Medicine

Key Concepts of Biological Medicine

Biological medicine deals with the body which is a dynamic organism that seeks to be in regulatory balance, both internally and in dynamic interaction with its exterior environment. In a sense this is a "systems theory" approach to health and healing. The body's effort at regulation is key, and regulatory blockage can occur at a distance from the primarily affected organ. In that sense, Biological Medicine incorporates traditional Chinese medicine and the concept of energy meridians running the length of the body and affecting specific organ systems.

Biological Medicine

Biological medicine seeks to prevent the blockages or disturbance fields in one area of a meridian which can precipitate disease in another associated organ or area along the same meridian. The main causes of regulatory blockage are hyperacidity, due primarily to chronic stress and excessive amounts of animal protein and sugars in our diets; malfunctioning of the digestive system, due to the loss of intestinal flora, food intolerances, and antibiotic use; asymptomatic (subclinical) heavy metal toxicity from amalgam fillings; and asymptomatic infections from medical/dental procedures like root canals and implants.

Dysfunction or disease is multicausal. This means that treatment is always individualized and based on the person's constitutional type, his/her history of physical and psychological problems, including surgery and other medical and dental treatments, the presenting symptomatology, and the degree of regulatory blockage as ascertained by an unusual array of diagnostic tests.

Thus two people who have the same disease may be treated completely differently. Biological Medicine incorporates Anthroposophical medicine and Homeopathic treatments that seek to support the body's symptoms rather than suppress them. Symptoms are the body's way of trying to bring itself back into regulatory balance and so they should not be suppressed by allopathic or anti-symptomatic pharmacology such as anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, immune suppressants, etc. We are urged to think of a "disease barrel," where the specific precipitating "trigger," or infective agent, is the only the latest insult to cause the entire accumulated disease load to finally overflow. The accumulated barrel full is made up of constitutional/genetic factors, microbial or infectious factors, long term physiological and psychological stressors, and disturbance foci on the specific organ or meridian systems.

The "internal milieu" of the body, and in particular, the cellular and between cell (interstitial) environments, is an extremely important factor in the development of disease. An internal milieu that is too "acid" or deficient in the ability to perform intracellular reactions (highly redox) or with few mineral salts (highly resistive), is an environment in which bacterial, fungi, and viruses can thrive. This internal milieu is very much affected by stress, the foods and water we ingest, the toxicity of our environment, both internal and external, and the history of past traumas and injuries, both physical and psychological. Bacteria and viruses can change form, "upgrading" to disease-producing forms or downgrading to lower weight proteins (endobionts) depending on the internal milieu of the body.

Biological Medicine Dentistry

So, what does this tell us about the treatment of specific diseases such as cancer or heart disease or arthritis? It's clear that dentistry is a key component of their overall approach. Of course, it's also true that the mouth and teeth are connected to the rest of the body, so maybe this is logical! It has been discovered that tooth problems are at the root (literally) of a wider variety of acute and chronic disease. Teeth lie on the meridian systems of the body and problems ones can create havoc further up or down the line.

Probably the most common problem found on dental exams is a mouth full of amalgam fillings. As you probably know, amalgam filling contain mercury, a highly toxic heavy metal associated with a wide variety of significant health problems including fatigue, insomnia, trembling, and muscle weakness; neurological symptoms such as migraines, facial neuralgia, dizziness, and eye disorders; chronic skin problems and hair loss; and other mucous membrane problems such as cystitis, colitis, and bronchitis. Gold can also cause problems, since it is often contaminated with palladium, another toxic heavy metal, but it is less common. A severe case of mercury toxicity can take months or even years to clear from the body.

Root canals are another common (iatrogenic) dental problem. Studies have shown that root canals almost always create asymptomatic infections. They may appear to be fine, but they are releasing bacterial strains that can be deadly.

Impacted wisdom teeth are also associated with severe chronic conditions. Several case studies where the removal of an impacted tooth lead to the disappearance of rheumatoid arthritis or migraine headaches or even heart disease. Impacted wisdom teeth are almost always considered "foci" and therefore recommended for removal, even if no particular disease appears to be present.

Unique Diagnostic Tests in Biological Medicine

One of the most intriguing aspects of biological medicine is its array of diagnostic tests. These are sophisticated techniques for mapping blockages and imbalances within the body's system.

Darkfield microscopy is a microscopic examination of living blood to detect degenerative tendencies, endobiotic load, acid/base imbalance, and immune system dysfunction. Based on the work of the German microbiologist, Gunther Enderlein, M.D., this technique gives a "snapshot" of the internal milieu of the blood, and as such, a picture of the dynamic state of the body. Darkfield microscopy is key in determining the proper treatment strategy for a patient.

Biological Terrain Assessment (BTA) is an examination of a person's internal biochemical environment. It shows how well a person's different regulatory systems are working and communicating with each other by analyzing the pH, intracellular reactivity (redox or oxidation), and mineral resistivity of the saliva, urine, lymph, and blood. As such, it is extremely useful for determining an individualized treatment regimen.

Another test is electroacupuncture or electrodermal screening (EDS) which is the measurement of the body's acupuncture points and meridian systems. It is a blend of technology and traditional Chinese medical theory. The system is used to assess the function of the organ systems such as the intestines, lymph, kidney, liver, etc. It may be used to determine the overall state of regulation and may also be used to identify foci of infection, dental problems, heavy metals, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, and food and environmental allergies. EDS may also be utilized in making individualized remedy selections.

Treatment

Biological Medicine uses energy medicine, homeopathic and isopathicremedies, and detoxification and cleansing regimens to successfully treat a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions. These include: allergies and connected diseases like asthma, chronic rhinitis, and hay fever; immune system disturbances associated with chronic infections; chronic stomach and colon disturbances, including ulcers, diarrhea, colitis, and Crohn's disease; rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and spinal cord changes; chronic hepatitis; heart and vessel disease, including angina pectoris and hypertension; neuralgia and pain condition, including migraines; heavy metal toxicity; chronic fatigue syndrome; cancer and tumor diseases; tooth and jaw infections; chronic fungal problems, including Candida; and psychic and psychosomatic disturbances.

Biological Medicine - A Truly Holistic Approach

Clearly Biological Medicine is a very different way of understanding health and disease, at least in contrast to traditional allopathic medicine. Yet it rests on some very ancient healing techniques, most notably Chinese medicine and more recently, botanical, homeopathic and Anthroposophical medicine. It is, overall a holistic, dynamic approach to the body and its functioning. This is in sharp contrast to our "modern" medicine, which is primarily based on an understanding of structures and their associated functional systems. Given that a corpse is the primary study tool for teaching medical students about the body, it is no wonder that medical education fails to appreciate the living, dynamic, integrated systems at work in each of us.

Incredibly, moderm medicine cuts off the head (psychology/psychiatry) and mouth (dentistry) from the rest of the body, maintaining that they have little to do with a person's state of physical health. Biological Medicine integrates these important systems back into a dynamic relationship with other bodily systems. It is a truly holistic approach that may revolutionize medical practice in the coming decades.
